The Greek-American Institute (GAI) was founded in 1912, and is the oldest continuously run Greek Orthodox School in the United States. GAI is a Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth grade school dedicated to the principles of Hellenism. Our mission statement declares that GAI is dedicated to providing children with a well-rounded education in a setting that promotes intellectual development, social responsibility, tolerance, critical thinking, and a moral foundation. The faculty and staff of GAI take that mission seriously.
At GAI, Kindergarten through Fourth grade each have one teacher per class, with special subject teachers (Greek, Physical Education, Dance, Music, Art, and Technology) rotating into each class throughout the day. Fifth through Eighth grade are divided into five major subjects (English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Greek), each taught by a separate teacher. Special subject teachers rotate into these classes, as well.
By the time a student finishes his or her middle school education at GAI, that student has been educated in all areas of the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, including Hellenic and American cultures. GAI follows New York State Teaching Standards, offering a rigorous and well-rounded educational program. Alongside its mission, GAI is also guided by basic principles and virtues that have evolved over the hundred plus years of its existence, and that have been influenced by the great ancient thinkers of over 2,500 years ago.
Recent graduates have attended Fordham Prep, Iona Prep, Salesian High School, Preston High School, St. Catherine’s Academy, The Ursuline School, the Bronx High School of Science, Townsend Harris High School, the LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts, Vanderbilt University, Fordham University, Barnard College, New York University, Hunter College, Union College, Manhattan College, Adelphi University, Loyola Marymount University, Iona College, and Old Dominion University.
