Principal's Message

Anne Prokop, Principal

Greek American Institute

The Greek American Institute is a nurturing school committed to academic excellence but also fosters positive values of home, faith, and community. We are a small school that achieves “big.”

Founded in 1912 by a group of hardworking Greek immigrants, GAI has entered its second century still committed to providing the finest education based on the principals of Hellenism. Historically, the vast majority of our students came from Greek families. However, today our student body is from a myriad of countries, including Russia, Ukraine, Serbia, Albania, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Ghana, and many more. Our graduates are accepted into the finest high schools, such as Fordham Prep, Iona Prep, Preston High School, the Ursuline School, the Bronx High School of Science, Townsend Harris High School, and the LaGuardia High School for Music and the Performing Arts.

When your child first enters the doors of our school, he will be encased in the GAI Bubble. It is a place where children are our first priority and are taught by caring, dedicated teachers who create life-long learners. It is a school that is growing and thriving. It is a school where impossible means “I’m possible.”

It is a school that I am proud of and continues to make me proud. Just this year:

  • Eighteen students qualified for The Johns Hopkins search for the gifted and talented.
  • When our children go on school trips-Mystic Seaport, The Science Museum, we are complimented on our behavior and manners.
  • We collect food and clothing for the needy.
  • Our seventh and eighth graders are big brothers and sisters for kindergarten and first grade.
  • Parents applaud their children at Oxi Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Presentation.
  • We break bread as a school family.
  • We are keeping with the latest educational challenges and modifying our curriculum to be in step with the rigors of the twenty-first century.
  • Our faculty goes the extra step to create an Earth Science website and a school-wide website!
  • In 2012, 100 percent of our eighth graders passed the Earth Science Regents Exam.
  • In 2013, our eighth graders amassed over $75,000 in scholarships.

We are small, but we deliver.  Yes, I am proud!
